Calebs Fishing Report 5 May 2007

St Mathieu Lake - Nice small chub take the dry fly well

River Vienne at Aixe sur Vienne - Larger chub 3lbs + easily spooked, feeding on sedge(caddis)

La Mordorée - Took 7 Rainbow to 2.5 lbs, damsel nymph, fritz and pheasant tail nymph. Black bass patrolling margins
needed fast retreive with lure to get them to follow. Looked to be around 5lbs and around the edges of deep water.

Local river Tardoire, too high to try.

A season at La Domaine De Jarlat April - Sept 2008

by Tony Scott.

We have had quite busy year at Le Petit Verger with a good number of guests having fished Domaine De Jarlat. I have had the pleasure of taking some guests and other anglers to the lakes for an introduction to flyfishing as well as some chaps who just wanted to improve their casting skills. As the lakes are stocked on a put and take basis the fish are usually in good condition and readily take a fly.
Early on in the year the weather was kind to us, with some sun but not too hot. Early season catches were caught sub surface( usually less than 30 cm deep) using small(size 14 or 16) nymph patterns. Two that have been very successful were the old favourite Pheasant Tail Nymph and a pattern found in the box tied in orange/ yellow seals fur which would suggest the presence of daphnia. A complete novice(picture to left)was lucky enough to be able to catch his limit using a GH Sedge fished on the surface, that particular day being dry, warm, and overcast with a slight breeze - ideal conditions. September brought its usual dry warm with watery sunshine days, cool starts, warm afternoons and cool evenings. To the right is a photo of a Golden Trout caught at Domaine De Jarlat in August on a Black and Peacock spider fished deep. Autumn is a productive time in our region and almost all of our guests/students have caught fish.

August 2008

by Ullrich Zinnecker

We're back from France already. As promised a little report.

I did in the end fish the (la) Dronne which is a pike's dream and is supposed to be well stocked with pike, carp and tench. I rented a Kayak which I got at the mill in Parcoul (paid 12,50? for five hours) and fished about 1 km of the river hard, but due to the changing weather and slightly coloured water without any fish caught. I could see a few carp and a snake but no pike.

Additionally I looked at La Isle which is supposed to be an excellent black bass river (as the entire region (Guitres - Libourne - Montpon-Menesterol) is considered to be the black bass golden triangle of france ....) There are a lot of lakes in the region that are supposed to have bass, but I only tried one - no success.

Both rivers are very hard to access. For flyfishing it is nearly hopeless without a boat! The Dronne can be fished with a Float tube - not the Isle in most places I would guess. It would be too dangerous. The only suitable shop I found is in Angouleme (Industrial area) and is called PACIFIC PECHE.

I hope this will help future people in the region.

Kind regards,
Ulli

2009 UPDATE.

What a superb year so far. We have discovered a lake not far away stocked with carp, pike, perch and some trout. Tucked away in the hills above the Tardoire Valley, the lake is quiet and peaceful and is only €6.00 per day to fish with no other permit needed. See L'ETANG MASSELLIEVRE on the previous page. Below is a photo of Keith who with his wife Margaret run La Vue, our sister gite (www.limousinfishing.com). Caught on a sweetcorn and bread mixture in July. I know we normally fish with the fly, but even we couldn't resist a few hours with coarse rods as the lake is any method and the trout were not playing.

Chub on the fly!!

A guest of ours this year decided upon a spot of flyfishing on his honeymoon - what a guy :-)

Fishing towards the weir on the River Vienne at Aixe sur Vienne using a hares ear emerger pattern, he landed the first chub in the photos. The larger one fell to a dry fly fished high in the current that swirls around the base of the weir. The air temperature was over 30 degrees, but this made little difference to the chub who were very obliging. As the Vienne is a category 2 river, you can fish all year around. Day permits are just 10 euros.

I felt a foray with the fly rod was in order, so fishing at the weir, I landed the roach below. Taken on a size 18 gold head pheasant tail nymph, there were other fish who were too quick for me. This of course means another trip is planned very soon to catch some of his pals.

****We can supply all of the tackle that you need to fly fish or coarse fish for as little as 20.00 euros per week.****

We would welcome any reports that you have for the Limousin as this assists other anglers in their sport,
please e-mail tony@flyfishinginfrance.com and we shall publish them on the site, cheers, Tony
