La Borderie, the hamlet we call home, is at the far South West of the Haute-Vienne, just a few kilometres from both the Charente Dept 16 and Dordogne Dept 24 regions. This makes the gite ideally placed for forays into those regions and beyond.

We moved to the Haute-Vienne in September 2004 and as a result have found our way through cheap ferry fares, french driving, car importation, shopping, doctors, builders merchants, planning permission and last year moving house - which was fun!...........

We have also set up a business here and have some excellent contacts in the Chambre de Commerce et Industrie in Limoges. We can always offer advice, based on our own experiences, to house hunters who wish to set up businesses here in the Limousin.

We appreciate that it can be a daunting decision to move your entire life to another country, however, having been here since 2004 we have difficulty looking back and can truly say that we have no regrets. Indeed, a substantial number of guests who have stayed with us have gone on to buy houses within this region. You will find that many people who are already here, having made the leap across the channel, are only too willing to share their experiences and help others in any way that they can. "Its just like England in the 50's" is a quote we very often hear.

We can give house hunters advice based on our experiences in the region and have good contacts with local estate agencies.

A great many estate agents in this region are bi-lingual and will happily spend time with you to find the property that you require. Many people who have stayed here in the Haute-Vienne, have fallen in love with the region and found their french dream here. We can assist you if you need to open a french bank account, arrange viewings at local estate agencies and have information regarding currency transfer to hand as well as allowing you free WiFi internet should you wish to keep in touch with friends, family, business or search for property whilst you are here. We have a range of books relating to living and working in france, buying and renovating french property and local maps.

How to get a great foreign exchange rate

05.08.2011

From Peter Lavelle at foreign exchange brokers Pure FX

Plan to up sticks and begin a new life under the French sun? Then one of the eight or nine million things to get done before purchasing that beautiful gite is sending funds abroad. For the unprepared person however this can be a mine field. Imagine for instance that you amble into your bank one morning, and request an exchange rate on a transfer into euros. The manager mightn’t tell you, but the exchange rate or she provides could in all likelihood be the absolute pits.

How then do you avoid this mine field, and find an exchange rate that doesn’t involve being fleeced for several thousand pounds? For this, I have compiled some hints and tips beneath. Take a gander, and then feel free to pick up the phone and get in touch! Our specialist dealers would love to help with your transfer.

1. Look out for the banks!

Like I mentioned, using a bank to change euros is the currencies equivalent of throwing yourself to the wolves. For instance, imagine that your funds are a cappuccino. Banks look to skim as much of the nice white foam as possible, leaving you with plain old coffee. Not the best option in other words!

2. Get a better rate! Contact a currency broker

To take the pain out of changing currencies then, your 1st port of call should be a foreign exchange broker. For brokers, changing currencies is as natural as breathing, meaning you can anticipate a tip top exchange rate. Even better, exchange brokers hold a keen gaze on the foreign exchange markets, meaning you can receive specialist help about the time to transfer too.

3. Plan plan plan

Last of all, to make transferring funds to France smooth sailing the best bet is to plan. Think about beaming the funds abroad as soon as possible, so you’re not landed with a dismal exchange rate at the last minute.
